If you’re suffering from chronic and consistent acid reflux, you may have tried every home remedy there is and still haven’t gotten any relief. If this is the case, it’s time to consider following a natural and healthy acid reflux diet. Most cases of acid reflux are caused by the foods we eat and how much of those foods as well, so considering an acid reflux diet is one of the best ways of getting permanent relief.
Following an acid reflux diet is going to involve two things – eating more of the foods that are good for you, and avoiding the foods that cause acid flare-ups. Both of these steps are going to be difficult, there’s no doubt about that, but they are both important when it comes to not just controlling acid production in the stomach but for overall health as well. Most of the foods that you avoid when following an acid reflux diet are difficult on your system to begin with, and many of the foods that you’re encouraged to eat on this diet are very healthy for you anyway.
Foods to avoid on your acid reflux diet are those that are high in acids themselves, and this includes red meat, processed or canned meats (hot dogs, tuna), and acidic fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, berries, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, cranberries, strawberries, garlic, onions, leeks, and beverages such as coffee, tea, colas, and usually wine along with hard liquors. Desserts that are high in oils such as cakes, cookies, and brownies are also typically avoided. Fried foods and fast foods are also to be avoided. Foods that you want to eat on your acid reflux diet are those that are less difficult for your body to digest, including oats, grains, lean proteins such as turkey, chicken, and fish, and leafy vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, chards, and items such as these.
Of course, the best acid reflux diet is going to be one that takes into account your own particular system and sensitivities. If you notice that certain foods cause your acid reflux to flare up, you need to avoid that. If there are foods you eat that don’t seem to bother you, then there’s no reason to avoid them. However, you also want to be aware of your meal portions when following an acid reflux diet. When you overload your stomach with food, even the best of foods, you’re going to force it to produce more stomach acid and as a result, this acid will spill over from your stomach and back up into your esophagus. Keeping track of what you eat and how much is important when following an acid reflux diet. Get used to eating smaller meals, and if you’re still hungry, simply have a light snack in between these meals. It’s also important to avoid eating for two to three hours before bedtime, as your acid reflux will probably flare up when you’re trying to sleep if your stomach is still full of food.

When was the last time you gave any thought or consideration to your digestive system?
If you’re like most people, it’s usually not until there’s a problem that you think about this system in your body. When you have a big meal and an hour later feel all that gurgling and agonizing pain, or when you’re having some problems in the bathroom; that’s usually the only time you think about what’s going on in and around your midsection.
Would it surprise you to learn that your digestive system is one of the most important systems in your body, and a key component to your health overall? And this is true in ways that you might not have ever thought of before.
Obviously the body cannot function without food and the nutrients it provides. Our muscles and tissues of our organs and other parts of the body need constant, everyday nourishment. When we begin to starve ourselves of these vital elements, our body will actually start feeding on itself, taking protein and amino acids from our own muscles for that nutrition. This is not good! Many persons who suffer from anorexia and other eating disorders have heart problems for years and even the rest of their life because the body begins to break down after not long when it doesn’t get fed properly.
These nutrients are absorbed into our body through the digestive system. When food breaks down in our stomach it then moves into the small and then large intestine, and blood flowing in and around this region picks up the elements released from that broken down food and takes it to the other areas of the body where it’s needed.
Our digestive system also does quite a bit to protect us from diseases. Harmful bacteria are often transported into the digestive system by the blood, where they are then also broken down and moved through the intestines, eventually being expelled with other waste. When you have a poorly functioning digestive system, you’re more likely to suffer from illnesses, infections, and other maladies.
Eating improperly such as on a lot of “junk” food with little nutritional value is not just harmful to our digestive system, but that lack of nutrition affects our entire body. Also, all those harmful elements we ingest every day, from heavy oils to sugar and cholesterol, also gets transported to every area of the body as well.
So never underestimate the importance of good digestive health! It affects not just your stomach but your entire body as well.

If you’ve been trying to treat your acid reflux and chronic heartburn on your own, either with homemade remedies or with over-the-counter antacids, and have found that relief is rather elusive, this may be because you’re not actually treating the real acid reflux causes. While these causes are of course different for each individual, they usually boil down to just a few common things. Typically acid reflux causes are from the foods you eat and the amount you eat as well.
Foods that have a high acid content themselves are common acid reflux causes. These foods include red meats, some dairy products such as yogurt and cheese, and fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, cranberries, and tomatoes. The acid in these foods, when they’re digested, just add to the acids in your stomach and cause them to regurgitate back up into your esophagus. When you add acid on top of acid, of course you’re going to get some reflux. These foods are common acid reflux causes in most people, although not everyone has as much of a sensitivity to them as others. Usually if you indulge in just moderate amounts when it comes to your red meats and citrus fruits, you may avoid acid reflux flare-ups.
Other acid reflux causes include the amount of foods that you eat, even if they are healthy foods that are good for you. When you overload your stomach or stuff yourself, of course some of that acid has no place to go and is going to spill over the top of your stomach and back up into your esophagus. Many people report flare-ups of acid reflux after a big meal, even if all they ate was lean protein and salad. And most people don’t recognize that overeating is one of the more common acid reflux causes; they assume that as long as what they’re eating is “healthy” then they shouldn’t have a problem, but putting too much food in your stomach is probably going to cause some heartburn and acid reflux.
Common acid reflux causes, apart from what you eat and how much you eat, include stress and smoking. When you’re under stress, your body reacts by taking blood away from the digestive system to divert it to the other muscles in your body, and the chemicals that signal your stomach to produce acid typically go into overdrive. Smoking is another of these common acid reflux causes because the poisons in the cigarettes are absorbed into the bloodstream and then carried to the stomach and digestive system through the blood.
You can do much on your own to correct or control these acid reflux causes by watching your diet, eating modest meals and portions, controlling your stress and of course quitting smoking. If you still have chronic flare-ups, however, then it’s time to talk to your doctor, as there are other physical defects that are also acid reflux causes and only your doctor can check for these and then treat them appropriately.

If you have acid reflux, you are probably very aware of this fact and are pretty sure you know where it happens. You can feel the burning sensation all up and down your midsection and may feel a pressure or squeezing in your chest as well.
For some, there is also difficulty swallowing. You can be very aware of the food moving down the length of your esophagus and feel a terrible sensation of choking or gagging as you try to get your food to work its way down.
Since all of these feelings occur in the body’s midsection it’s easy to assume that acid reflux happens there. Many know that the pain occurs when acid spills out of your stomach and back up into your esophagus, which does not have a protective lining the way the stomach does. This acid wears away at the esophagus and causes little holes or ulcers to develop. The pain a sufferer feels is both that acid bubbling up, those ulcers developing, and the food they’re swallowing scraping along those ulcers when they swallow. So, many assume that acid reflux happens in the esophagus, where you feel the pain.
In reality, this is not the case. acid reflux is a disease or condition of the stomach. The pain is in the esophagus, this is true, but only because the esophagus is being exposed to that stomach acid when it’s not supposed to be. Imagine if you had a small jar of caustic chemicals that leaked onto your skin, causing you pain. What would be defective, your skin or the leaking jar? Obviously the jar, even though the pain would be felt on your skin.
And so it is with acid reflux. The stomach acids are leaking out to where they don’t belong; the defect is in your stomach area, not the esophagus. There are two common reasons for this – a defect in a small valve at the top of the stomach that is supposed to close after you swallow to keep the stomach’s contents in place, or from eating in such a way that the stomach produces far too much acid and it has no place to go but back up the esophagus. This means either eating foods that are high in acid content or eating so much food that the stomach naturally overflows.
So regardless of where you feel the pain, acid reflux is happening in your stomach. To properly address this condition, you need to understand just why it’s happening in the first place.

There are some people who have acid reflux disease because of a defect in a small valve at the top of their stomach, which is supposed to close after you swallow in order to keep food and stomach acids in the stomach. However, for many people there is a strong connection between acid reflux disease and diet, and not just what they are eating but how much in any one sitting. The reason for this is because some foods are much more difficult for the body to break down and digest and this causes the stomach to churn out more acid when presented with these foods, and because some foods have a high acid content themselves. The connection between acid reflux disease and diet high in foods that are acidic themselves is that their acid, coupled with the acid in your stomach, is of course going to be just too much acid in your system at one time.
The good news about this connection between acid reflux disease and diet is that this means that you may be able to make certain changes in your life and your dietary habits in order to control and possibly even eliminate acid reflux. For example, red meat of any variety is one of those foods that are very difficult for your body to break down and digest. While many people hate to hear they should cut back on their beloved steaks and hamburgers, by at least cutting back some on the number of times you eat red meat you should have fewer flare-ups of acid reflux disease, and diets lower in red meat and typically healthier anyway. Also, foods that have a high acid content can be harmful to your stomach, so cutting back on citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits and tomatoes may have a good effect on your condition.
One connection between acid reflux disease and diet that many people forget is the amount of food that you eat, not just what type. When your stomach is overloaded with food it is just naturally going to produce more acid and then because your stomach is so full, it will naturally spill over and back up into your esophagus. When considering acid reflux disease and diet, you absolutely must be aware of your portion and meal sizes at any one time. Stuffing yourself at every meal is going to cause more flare-ups, but limiting your portion sizes to something more modest may help as well. If you’re still hungry throughout the day, having small snacks between meals usually helps to fill you up. Many doctors report that this type of eating is healthier for you anyway, as your body has a better chance of digesting your food properly if you eat smaller meals.
For some, there may not actually be a connection between acid reflux disease and diet. They have a genetic defect in the area of the stomach or are just more prone to acid buildup.
